The University of East London Mooting Society, with support from its Law School, recently organised and hosted and filmed their annual show moot at the Royal Courts of Justice on the Strand. What made the event a special occasion was that it was before an esteemed panel of judges, namely two Law Lords and a leading City firm partner: Lord Rodger of Earlsferry, Baroness Hale of Richmond and Paul Lewis, Herbert Smith LLP.
The mooting teams were made up of Shaniah Royer &Michelle McCullen appearing for the appellant and Justin Pierce & Amani Haaris appearing for the respondent. The moot itself considered the lawfulness of the removal of life support treatment from a baby and whether the defence of necessity should be made available to medical practitioners.
Lord Rodger, Baroness Hale and Paul Lewis put the mooters through their paces, testing the strength of their preparedness, legal knowledge, advocacy skills and court etiquette before retiring to deliberate. Other moot society students acted as court ushers. However, the real importance of the filmed moot was that it will be used as a resource tool in the East London community to better inform prospective students about other aspects of the law student experience and how they too can organise mock trials around relevant social issues that they are concerned with.
Justin Pierce & Amani Haaris won the moot, whilst Shaniah Royer and Michelle McCullen won the legal argument. The distinguished panel also gave the mooters fantastic tips and pointers on how to present legal argument and how to get the court on your side. Fiona Fairweather, Dean of School, in thanking the judges stressed the importance of having a mooting society and the value of strong advocacy skills for students, whilst George Laurenin, Clerk to the Mooting Society, thanked everyone who took part or who helped organise the event.
